When families choose to send a packed lunch from home, we request that lunches are packed in zero-waste, reusable containers with reusable utensils and cloth napkins. A zero-waste lunch also includes no single serve items or individually packaged items.
Please send a reusable water bottle every day. We discourage the use of disposable plastic water bottles as the use of such products is a serious environmental concern.
Lunch sent from home does not have to follow the vegetarian guidelines. Please mark all items clearly with your child’s name.
At Unity, we encourage you to send in healthy food choices for your child’s lunch and snack. By healthy choices we mean whole, unprocessed food, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Foods that will sustain your child nutritionally throughout the day.
Please do not send in candy, cakes or other items that have a high sugar and low nutritional content.
When sending in food from home for sharing (birthdays, class parties etc.), please send in healthy choices. Fresh fruit or fruit kebabs, vegetable crudités and dip, wholesome muffins, cheese and crackers, popcorn or trail mix are all good choices. Please do not bring in cupcakes, cake with icing, brownies, candy or other items that have a high sugar and low nutritional content.
Please also keep our zero waste policy in mind when sharing food from home – reusable plates, utensils and cloth napkins are recommended.
Principles of Sustainability:
Reduce / Reuse / Recycle
A conscious and reduced consumption which takes into consideration not only the needs and desires of the consumer, but the future hidden costs to our earth, our societies, and future generations.
